TWA Flight 800 was a Boeing 747-100 flying from New York-JFK to Rome-Fiumicino, via Paris-CDG. On 17 July 1996, the 747 exploded and crashed 10 miles from the Moriches Inlet in Long Island, 12 minutes after takeoff. All 230 passengers and crew were killed. The cause of the crash was a faulty wire that short-circuited in the fuel tank, although there is evidence that the 747 was shot down by accident.
