HENRY GEORGE MONUMENT - Fairhope, Alabama This marble obelisk memorializes both the 19th century social commentator Henry George and the economic remedy he proposed---the "single tax." In his book "Progress and Poverty," George argued that the economic health of any government can be traced to its taxation policies. In his view, any government that taxed either labor or capital was courting self-destruction because it was discouraging human initiative. It was only land, the third component of any robust economy that offered the single, viable basis for taxation. In fact, enlightened tax policies could actually encourage land use that would benefit the largest number of people. The Fairhope Single Tax Corporation bought much of the surrounding land in 1894 to serve as a model of single tax principles. #Alabama #Fairhope #Fairhope_Pier #Henry_George #Henry_George_Park #Mobile_Bay #Progress_And_Poverty #single_tax #single_tax_colony
