I made this from salvaged 2X4's. The garage next door was torn down leaving beautiful, very old 2X4's, some 16 ft long. Had to use them. This bench lives outdoors -- in Minnesota. Only covered with a tarp in the winter.
* bullet-proof top,
* overhang in front w/ 2X4 turned horizontal to help with clamping,
* top attached to frame with turnbuckles and hooks-- making it removable,
* diagonal bracing with cables and turnbuckles -- easy to square up the frame when/if necessary
Tip: if you use threaded rods as I did, place the holes as accurately as possible then drill the holes significantly larger than the rods. This will allow you to assemble the top more easily and allow you to adjust the boards for a flat surface.
Tip: assembled with lag bolts & inserts, carriage bolts and a few screws
Tip: I finished the whole bench with boiled linseed oil --- kept adding till it wouldn't absorb any more, then let it dry in the sun. I also treated the bottoms of the legs to limit water absorbsion.
