Description
Unknown to Krupp, the Wa.Prüf. 6 quietly gave another contract to Daimler-Benz to develop superstructure and turret for the 1 Serie-La.S. Krupp learned about this only on late March 1933, and on May 1933 a Wa.Prüf. 6 team - along with a repersentative from Krupp - examined the DB's prototype superstructure and turret fitted with dual Simson-Suhl machinegun. The DB was to modify this first design accordingly to the Wa.Prüf. 6 requests and produce another prototype out of carbon-steel with the final armor thickness, which finally resulted in design represented by this model. On mid 1934 the Reichswehrministerium made clear that all means were to be employed to equip the Army in the shortest period with tanks based on the La.S chassis. Because of this tightened production deadline, and the failure of Krupp's own design at Kummersdorf firing test later that year, the decision was made to put the DB's design for series production. Thus born the first vehicle in the German WW II tank nomenclature. #daimlerbenz #krupptraktor #la_s #landwirtschaftliche_schlepper #panzer_1 #panzer_I
