A pair of geodesic domes design for the SketchUp exhibit at World Maker Faire 2014. Conceptual design for the site was performed in SketchUp and then dome parameters were defined at Domerama.com dome calculator (where connectors were also defined and procured). This is a 3V dome, meaning that there are three different strut/pipe lengths in this structure. The higher the number of strut types, the higher the resolution or the smoothness of the geodesic shape. We opted for a 3V dome because it's simple to prepare and fabricate, and still a solid structure that demonstrates the phenomenon of tensegrity in geodesic shapes. We also designed a modular tarping system based off the idea of a gore. These gores were visualized with basic geometry in SketchUp, then laid out as flat faces using the flattery plugin. PVC materials were all procured directly from Home Depot.
