This is a picnic table that I built from some 1x4 pine boards for my children. I can't take credit for the original design, as I found an Instructable (link below) that got me started. A couple modifications that I made were:
- Pine instead of cedar: the cedar at my local lumber yards was crap, so I went with Pine which I plan on protecting with some kind of finish.
- Gaps between top boards: I debated this for several minutes during the building process, and concluded that pushing the boards together and eliminating the gaps was the best route. I used vices to make a tight fit.
- Wood glue: I added wood glue to the materials (make sure its suitable for exterior) because I find that it really makes a difference in eliminating weaknesses in a wooden object.
- Chalk boards on the side: I actually still need to do this, but its on the plans so I thought I'd mention it. My wife wanted this to also be an activitiy table. This played a role in the board gap decision too, as its tough to color when theres a 1/8" gap under the paper every 3.5".
Anyways, this was a fun afternoon project, and the kids did a great job "helping".
