A few days ago I watched a tv show called Grand Designs. A couple built a house on an island on the River Thames near London and this model is based on that idea.
As far as I know, the design originates in Holland and is built to withstand high flood waters by raising the house with the water levels on a concrete tub buried in a 3 metre square concrete square hole. The house itself floats on top of the concrete tub and is kept in place by 13 metre hign steel 'Dolphins. Ballast can be placed in the lower cellar area to keep the whole structure balanced. This can be seen in the red block in the lower space. The house itself can accommodate up to 5 people and can be placed anywhere there is a chance of high water levels
