USS Currituck AVP7 class Seaplane Tender, updated

Lazarus S.
A follow on to the Curtiss class tender, named for Currituck Sound, 4 ships were built. Launched during the Second World War, all served in the final stages of the Pacific War. These 14500 ton ships were designed to provide service, support and berthing for a squadron of large patrol seaplanes (PBY, PBM, P5M) at a forward location known as a Seadrome , where aircraft were serviced afloat. Seaplanes up to 60 ton could be hoisted aboard for heavy maintenance , recovery or transport. The ships served until 1969, seeing service in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and as Primary Mission ships on Arctic and Antarctic exploration, scientific missions and Nuclear testing (of note, Operations HIGH JUMP and ARGUS). USS Norton Sound served as a trials ship for virtually every post-war US Navy electronic and weapon systems, including TALOS, TERRIER, AGEIS and its predecessor, TYPHOON. Norton Sound was decommissioned in 1987. Fully texture mapped. #Coldwar #Korean_war #navy #Seaplane #seaplane_tender #ship #US_Navy #Vietnam_war #warship #WW_II
