Responding to requests from Japanese airlines for a high-capacity aircraft to serve domestic routes between major cities, Boeing developed the 747SR as a short range variant of the 747-100 with lower fuel capacity and greater payload capability. The −100SR, had a strengthened body structure and landing gear. Seven −100SRs were built from 1973 and 1975, each with Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7A engines and all going to Japan air lines.
