Part of the Gloucester Docks collection. Gloucester is Britain's most inland port. Some 16 miles from the nearest navigable river and 50 miles from the sea proper, Gloucester was connected to the trade lanes in the early nineteenth century by the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal. The canal was originally 18ft deep and could bring the biggest of traders into the heart of the city. This made Gloucester the gateway to the Midlands for all sorts of shipments. The docks are at the northern end of the canal. From here you can connect on to the upper Severn river and the rest of the inland waterways network.
