Duckling with Detachable Boat

Duckling with Detachable Boat

Menna
Description
This is a warm shelter embedded in the grass of a small piece of land sprouting out of the heart of the Nile River in Cairo, Egypt. The shelter's form is an abstraction of a young duck and it includes a mini boat on one of the facades. The mini boat may be detached from the structure and used for a lazy cruise on the Nile River. The shelter consists of two units, a sleeping unit and a studying unit. The sleeping unit is the duckling's head, which may be entered via a door located on the back of the duckling's head. This unit includes a skylight, allowing one to gaze into the sky while lying down. The transparent glass on the ceiling of this unit may be opened for natural air to enter. The studying unit comprises the reciti-curvi-linear bulk of the structure and includes many windows for natural light and ventilation. The form of the shelter is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's principle of Organicism whereby this cozy shelter responds to the surrounding river and vegetation via its form and its materials. The shelter is primarily composed of straw-bale bricks, stone, wood, and transparent glass. #Egypt #Nile_River #Organicism #Shelter
