A vertical lift bridge formerly known as the welfare Island Bridge connects Roosevelt Island to Queens. It was constructed between March 1952 and May 1955 at a cost of 6,5 million dollars. It is currently the only means of vehicular traffic to the Roosevelt Island as the lifts from the Queensboro Bridge were demolished in the 1970s.
The Roosevelt Island bridge spans 127 meters over the East Channel of the East River. The bridge has a clearance of 12 metres in closed position and can be raised to 33 meters over the mean high water. The 1000 tonne lift span carries two vehicular lanes and one pedestrian lane. #East_River_Crossings #Lift_Bridge #Manhattan #New_York #Queens
