Hotel Normandy Plaza (original design)

MILO M.
This is the Normandy Plaza hotel in uptown Miami Beach. This unique Art Deco historic building was let run down by a very irresponsable board, with interest in having the building sold to developers in the 1980s and 1990s. However, in 2001 the hotel was finally sold to a hotel chain. This company renovated the entire building in 2006. It wasan enormous improvement, but the original eyebrow above the porch was removed. The tripartite front façade had a lot of different paintjobs over the years. The one most people know was done by the owners of the 1980s and 1990s. They painted the building pink, and bass relief decorations around the central bay were accentuated with white, purple, blue and green. Those decorations were designed by Henry Hohauser. They represent flowers and small plants in spring, when the start to get over the winterbreak again. The design is very similar the the design of the Empire Hotel (Henry Hohauser, 1937) and the Webster Hotel (Henry Hohauser, 1939.
