The Duke of Wellington

The Duke of Wellington

Simon W.
This historic public house in the Old Town of Southampton was first contructed in 1220 on Norman wine cellars. It had to be repaired after the French raid of 1338 and in 1494 the owner established their own brewery in the building, calling it the Bere House. It was known as the Shipwrights Arms in the eighteenth century but by 1815 had changed its name to the Duke of Wellington in honour of the contemporary military hero. It continues to function as a traditional English pub to this day. The 'half-timbered' method of construction gives the building a 'crooked' appreance, although structurally it is perfectly sound. #pub #Southampton
