The Roosevelt Island Air Tram is essentially a series of ski gondolas used as an aerial public transit- the NY Times estimates users at 5,000 passengers per day. It was originally opened 1976 though a series of break downs meant that the tower crown(s) and the cars were remodelled in 2010. The new system has additional cables and rigs to brace against wind sway. And cars are not ganged together in their operations. Its a fantastic sight seen from walkways across the Queensboro Bridge surpassed only by the sight of the city below seen from the rail cars. I had a chance to ride the tram before moving from the city. I have my video here:
As Google Street view still has the old rusty orange design photography textures were used from Roosevelt Islander Blogspot, NY1 stills and Duc Le Photography.
