Fríkirkjan (Free Lutheran Church), Reykjavík

wurzeller
This small green-roofed church is located picturesquely alongside the Tjörnin lake in central Reykjavík. It was built in 1902 in the Icelandic vernacular tradition of (drift)wood covered in corrugated metal, there being few other easily-accessible building materials around. The Free Lutheran church was counterposed to the Danish Lutheran church and it played a role in the independence and labour movements of the 1920s. The church is also used for secular music events: folk, rock and jazz among them. #chapel #church #corrugated #cross #evangelisk #iceland #icelandic #iron #island #kirkja #lutheran #protestant #reykjavik #sheeting #simple #spire #tin #tjornin #town_lake
