Shaker Workbench - Full Joinery Details

I like the Shaker philosophy and design sense and I am short on space and need to maximize storage. That's the basis for this model. This design is not faithful to any original Shaker design, but I have tried to maintain a Shaker philosophy in it. It is heavily influenced by Christopher Schwarz's excellent "Workbenches: From Design and Theory To Construction And Use" and is a hybridization of Shaker with Roubo. ~~~ After having built the workbench (except the drawers), I’ve reposted the design. The current model is not exactly how I’ve built the workbench, but it reflects what I have learned in building and using the workbench. I have added a "toe kick" along the front because when traverse planing, I like to have my forward foot further under the workbench top than I thought would be necessary. I've also changed two of the top drawers to shelves because I've found it very useful to have quick access to my shooting board, bench hooks and pounding boards. I'm still not sure about the best height. At 35" for a 6'1" tall user, it works great for hand planing and other hand tool work, but my back doesn't feel good when doing detail work. I plan to look at making a removable raised surface. ~~~ A version of the plan which includes the mistakes and changes made during construction is posted separately as "Shaker Workbench - as completed, errors included". #christopher_schwarz #Roubo #Shaker #Shaker_style #Shaker_Workbench #vise #woodworking #work_bench #workbench
