Arkadia

nevermor
Arkadia building, situated to the west of Liberty Squre, was built in 1802-1804 according to the plans of Friedrich Gilly, son of David. Originaly it used to be a German theatre, where Polish performances took place rarely and were charged. During its seventy-years existence great Polish and German actors visited its scene, with Helena Modrzejewska, Wojciech Bogusławski, Niccolo Paganini and Franz Liszt among them. The original shape of the building appeared to be more raw, ressembled the architecture of the French Revolution. Its envelope changed during rebuildings in 1877 and 1912, when Kaffeehaus Hohenzollern was placed on its ground floor facing Liberty Square. On 27th December 1918, in front of Arkadia, the first insurgent of Greater Poland Uprising was killed, trying to assault the Prussian police headquarters. #Arkadia #Empik #Kawiarnia #Plac_Wolności #Poznań #Teatr #Theatre
