USS Tecumseh

USS Tecumseh

A W.
Union iron-hulled monitor of the Canopus Class and the first ship named USS Tecumseh. Tecumseh was launched on 12 September 1863 at Jersey City, New Jersey, by Secor and Company,of New York City; and was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 19 April 1864, Commander Tunis A. M. Craven in command. Colored as originally commissioned - bullet shield added after upon CDR Craven's request. She is most noted for being sunk by a torpedo (mine) at the outset of the battle of Mobile Bay, prompting the famous quote by Admiral Farragut "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" although this exact statement is unlikely, the sentiment was carried. Credit to Colin for his terrific ship's wheel. #Civial_War #ironclad #Mobile_Bay #Navy_monitor #tecumseh #US_Civil_War #US_navy
