Description
Eliot School is the fourth oldest continuously run school in America, behind Harvard, Roxbury Latin and Boston Latin. Founded in 1676 by a group of farmers in Jamaica Plain, MA, its early donors included John Ruggles (1676) and the Reverend John Eliot (1689), the latter after whom the school (and the nearby street) would be named. In its first 200 years of existence, the school would serve to educate Native Americans, Africans and colonial children, and occupied four different locations in Jamaica Plain before settling in its current schoolhouse, built in 1831. In 1889, Eliot School turned its focus to the arts, starting with “manual arts” such as woodworking, cooking and more. Today it continues to offer classes to people of all ages in fine and applied arts. #arts #Boston #Eliot #Jamaica_Plain #MA #School #schoolhouse
