Situated on the Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago the InterContinental Chicago is one of the city's most luxurious hotels and is a landmark frequented by architectural tours. The building ,completed in 1929, was originally built, as the Medinah Athletic Club, a luxury club for the Shrine organization by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. Ahlschlager used elements of many different architectural styles through out the building, including, Moorish, Spanish, Venetian, Egyptian, Assyrian, and Greek. Each frieze located on the 8th floor depict a different scene, with Wisdom represented on the north wall, Consecration on the west, and Contribution on the south. The figures in all three scenes are said to be modeled after the faces of club members at the time of its design. The tower-like structure near the onion dome was built as an airship mooring but was never used. Five years after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 the Shrine Organization lost control of the building, and in the decade that followed the building went through various incarnations, including a brief stint as residential apartments.
