Sloop of war

Description
Hull including head and gallery done in Delftship. Made this one ketch rigged (main and mizzen mast fore and aft rigged, with square topsail on the main mast.) She carries 14 4lb brass guns, just like the Sophie from Master & Commander, but she's a little less cramped and she's ketch rigged, whereas the Sophie had a main mast that was fully square rigged. Unlike the Sophie, this sloop also mounts 2 fore and 2 aft 4lb chasers and 2 32lb carronades on the poop deck. This would be a perfect pirate ship, too: roomy enough at 250 tons to carry plenty of men and treasure, yet still small enough with a 9' draft to sail over reefs and hide in tiny coves; rigged to be fast close-hauled so one's prey can't escape upwind, yet she carries enough square rig to be fast downwind as well. She could also be propelled by sweeps. In 18th & 19th century navies, ships like this were rated as a 'sloop of war' and used mostly to protect or raid merchant convoys, and for coastal patrols. The captain would have the rank of 'Master and Commander' rather than 'Post Captain,' and they would carry up to 100 men. #foreandaft_rig #gaff_rig #ketch #pirate_ship #sloop #sloop_of_war
