Japanese Type A Kō-hyōteki-class midget sub

Rootin' T.
Type A Ko-hyoteki-class midget sub. The Type-A were just over 78 feet long, ran on batteries and had a submerged speed of nearly 19 knots. These subs carried two torpedos and had a two man crew. They were ferried to a point near their target by a larger fleet submarine and dropped off. Five of these mini-subs participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor 7-Dec-1941. Two of the subs actually made it into the harbor and attacked the battleship Oklahoma, the Destroyer Monaghan and the seaplane tender Curtiss. The Monaghan later sank her attacker. Of the five crews, nine men perished and one was captured when his sub ran aground on Oahu. The Type A fired a torpedo much more powerful than the air-dropped version carried by the ''Kate'' torpedo plane and may have hit the battleship Oklahoma, contributing to her rapid capsizing.
