The library is named after Ole Rolvaag, author of Giants in the Earth. It was built in three sections. The first, built in 1942, houses the English Department, the Kierkegaard Library (founded and run for many years by Professor Emeriti Howard Hong), the Norwegian-American Historical Assocation, and the college's own Archives, known as the Shaw-Olson Center for College History. In this older part of the library are some of the most beautiful classrooms on campus. Additions were made to the building in the 1960's and again in 1991.
Rolvaag is 175,000 square feet and contains over 500,000 volumes. Rolvaag is one of three libraries on the St. Olaf campus, including the Glasoe Science Library and the Halvorson Music Library. In 2004, St. Olaf and Carleton College integrated their catalogs, allowing students on either campus to easily find materials both in the St. Olaf libraries and in Carleton's Gould Library. Materials are transported between the schools daily.
