Fragata Tipus 130 (Frigate T.130)
Design was originally conceived of in 1982 as an ASW platform. During the design, a significant amount of Anti-Aircraft capability was added in the form of the Sarrissa AA Missile Vertical Launch System. The F T.130 is inspired by the B&V MEKO frigates (check out the stacks) and the British Type 23 Frigates.
Like all Frigates, the FT130 is designed to be fast, independent, and efficient. Power comes from 4 Gas Turbines, all of which are geared to generators and the Prop-Shafts. The twin propeller set up is based off of Submarine Design, making them quiet.
Sonar was the primary concern during the design of the hull. The primary ASW unit is a towed drone. The Drone can be up to 3 Kilometers from the Ship, and can move up to 1 kilometer to either Port or Starboard while underway. This will get it out of the ships wake. In addition to the Towed Drone, there are also Side Scan Arrays and the more or less standard front array.
Radar duty is divided into 2 parts. The Front array is a Surface Scanning Twin Beam (TR 1458). This is tuned in particular for looking for periscopes, wakes, and small vessels. The Rear Array is designed for Aircraft, and consists of 3 rotating Phased Arrays. This is able to track 75 targets at once and engage up to 20 at once.
The Sarrissa VLS consist of 4 bunkers of 32 ea Sarrissa missiles. Range is 50km and is able to intercept incoming aircraft moving at Mach 2.5
In addition, the stern can accommodate 2 helicopters, although this Generation (Gen 1) did not have maintenance facilities.
CWIS is geared around 4ea SdAE 40mmx2 AAA. This QF system is able to have ranged fuses on the shells, but it is an older system and is not able to operate independently.
Main gun has 2ea 110mm Barrels. This weapon was derived from Tank armament and was designed for use against small craft. Although very effective against the targets it was designed for, it was not effect against anything else in use.
The F T.130 is equipped with 16 Torpedo Tubes with The 325L Torpedo. This was the 1st use of the 325L, which was designed to be a light weight, multi-purpose torpedo. The 325L was able to be launched from Air, Ships, and Subs, and was independent once launched.
Top speed of the F T.130 is 38kts, and able to cruise at 31kts. Crew is 227.
