Description
This is the Waharoa (Gateway) into our school gully which is a nature reserve. This Waharoa design symbolises the Maori creation story. The feather symbolises Rangi the sky father, the ground and sacred stones (whatu kura) are the earth mother-Papa-Tuanuku they are connected by the "Gateway's" uprights encircled by Aka Vines. Tana Mahuta climbed this vine after receiving the 3 kete (Baskets) of knowledge (mātauranga) containing "peace & love, karakia (ritual chants) & practical knowledge."-Rob Ansell.
