Tom D.
They facilitated the acquisition and disposal of horses – the only means of transport in the colony – and other livestock. As well, gold seekers were obviously keen to move as quickly and easily as possible from goldfield to goldfield – from one rush to the next - and did not want to be encumbered with goods and chattels. Those men who styled themselves ‘auctioneers’ were not only able to buy and sell horses and carriages, but were able to convert surplus goods into cash. This permitted itinerant diggers to move more easily from goldfield to goldfield.
