A ship with a chequered history. Launched in Germany in 1930 as the ‘Monte Rosa’, she served the Nazis as a cruise ship for the ‘Strength Through Joy’ movement. At the outbreak of World War II she was converted into a troopship, though she also assisted in the transport of Norwegian jews to Auschwitz. She survived several attacks by air and by mines and, at the end of the War, was handed over to Britain to continue as a troopship. In 1948, however, she was renamed as ‘Empire Windrush’ and was directed to carry around 800 migrants – who became known as the ‘Windrush Generation’ - from Jamaica to London. 2018 is the 50th anniversary of that voyage.
In 1954, following an engine room explosion, the ship caught fire and eventually sank off the coast of Algeria.
