Evans Gambit The Evans gambit is a chess opening, determined by the moves: e4 e5 Cf3 Cc6 Ac4 Ac5 b4 According to tradition it was first played in the nineteenth century by Captain William Davies Evans during a crossing of the San Giorgio canal. It was played for the first time at a high level in the match between La Bourdonnais and McDonnell in 1834; remained popular throughout the 800 even at the highest levels.
