St. Bartholomew's Cathedral

Ivan K.
The work on St Bartholomew's Church, the dominant feature of the town, began at the end of the 1200s, simultaneously with the foundation of Plzeň. The construction took almost two centuries. - The Gothic-style building is 58 m long, 30 m wide and the spires are 25 m high. The main tower is 102.3 m high, being the highest in the Czech Republic. - A statue situated next to the altar, the "Madonna of Plzeň", dates from approx. 1390. It is an example of so-called "Beautiful style" of the Czech Madonnas. - The beautiful Šternberk Chapel, decorated with Renaissance wall paintings, was added during the large scale reconstruction, result of the large fire hitting Plzeň in the year of 1507. - In 1993, Pope John Paul II established a bishopric in Plzeň and St Bartholomew's church was promoted to a cathedral. #architecture #Bartholomew #Bartolomej #Bartolomeje #Bartoloměj #Bartoloměje #budova #building #cathedral #chram #chrám #church #history #katedrála #kostel #Plzen #Plzeň #worship
