Detached Kitchen

Detached Kitchen

Timmeh FX
This building is called the detached kitchen because it was built separately from the house. The reason for building a separate kitchen was to keep the heat out of the house which was especially important during the summer months. All cooking was done over a fireplace. Fires would have been laid before dawn and would have been kept burning throughout the day. Women and children did most of the cooking. It was a hot job and consisted of working with heavy kettles over open fires. Creating a meal took much longer than today since everything was made from scratch. Most meals were kept simple. Meals served were breakfast, dinner, and supper, with dinner being the largest one. #Daniel_Boone #detached #historic #kitchen #Lindenwood_University #Missouri
