This model is of the southern half of Pompeii Region VIII Insula 7. It was a working class part of the city located adjacent to the theatre district and is largely unrestored. Following excavation Pompeii was divided into 9 Regions (Regio) numbered with Roman numerals I to IX. Each Region was further divided into Insula (Latin for Island) where each Insula is one city block. Signs were affixed to the buildings on every street corner indicating the Regio and Insula numbers.
