Commissioned for construction in 1914 by James E. Draper to house his general merchandise store, J.E. Draper and Co. aka Draper Store. The building is constructed out of native sandstone which came from the Miller Quarry about 5 miles west of Craig (link geo-locate and panorama of quarry). The entire structure was built to be practically fire proof according to Mr. Draper. James E. Draper appointed Edwin E. Jones as the contractor to erect the 29 by 100 foot building. - The building still stands today, with little modifications from it original grandeur, but over the years the building has housed numerous businesses, and most recently Draper Insurance Group. Coincidently there is no relation to the mentioned James E. Draper, but the current Draper Insurance Group family did have relatives named James Draper... Draper Insurance Group was originally Alpine Insurance Agency until 2004. Alpine Insurance Agency was starting in Steamboat Springs sometime around 1982 and expanded its operations into Craig in 1993 by Marin L. Draper and his family. In 1997, Draper Insurance Group moved to its current location of 115 W. Victory Way, and in 2004 a name change to Draper Insurance Group after Marvin L.
