On the night of March 12, 1989, LibertyJet flight 193 was approaching Seattle-Tacoma Airport. The Sacremento-originated flight was carrying 56 passengers and 6 crew members. At 11:43 PM Pacific time, the plane reported a very bright aurora borealis above the Seattle skies. The plane was then cleared to land at 11:45 PM LJ193 was cleared to land, seconds later the planes instrument readings suddenly changed. Some shut down completely, while two of the three main engines burst into flames, and all communication was lost. Thankfully the plane was several thousand feet from the runway where it made a visual emergency landing. All passengers evactuated the plane safely once the airliner came to a stand still. No one was harmed. As it turns out a strong coronal mass ejection from the sun hit Earth that night. The highly charged particles it carried with it interfered with the electronics on the plane. This same CME also caused power surges and outages throught northern Europe and North America.
