Kinzie Street Railroad Bridge

Kinzie Street Railroad Bridge

Andrew B.
This is a model of the single leaf bascule bridge across the north branch of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago, Illinois known as the Kinzie Street Railroad Bridge. This bridge was built in 1907 and opened in September of 1908. At the time of its completion, it held the record for longest and heaviest Bascule bridge in the world at 196 ft long. This bridge is one of only a few bascule bridges in Chicago where the counterweight is above the ground. There is no traffic across this bridge and has remained in the opened position indefinitely since around 2001. When it was in use, it was operated by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. It was declared a landmark in 2007. #1907 #bascule #branch #Bridge #chicago #chicago_bridge #chicago_river #downtown #illinois #Kinzie #landmark #north #northwestern #pacific #Railroad #river #Street #train #union
