Shaffer Hotel

Shaffer Hotel

bmh
Built in 1923 by Clem "Pop" Shaffer, who designed and built it himself, the Shaffer Hotel is one of New Mexico's hidden treasures of folk art. Inside and out are seen Pop Shaffer's intricate and imaginative interpretations of Native American design, including the swastikas seen on the facade, an ancient symbol long before it acquired negative connotations. More of his imaginative folk art environment can be seen at his home,Rancho Bonito, a mile south of town. The beautifully mainttained Shaffer still serves as a hotel, restaurant, and gift shop. And, as several investigations have suggested, "Pop" may still linger in the hotel to this day... http://www.sgha.net/nm/mountainair/shaffer.html #folk_art #haunted #historic #Hotel #New_Mexico #Shaffer
