Located in Westside of Chicago and designed by Farr Associates, the Christy Webber Landscaping building was designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards at the Gold or Platinum level. To insulate and extend the life of the roof, grasses, bushes and trees were planted. Rainwater is collected and pumped into on-site trucks to water nursery plants. The $3.2 million 18,000-square-foot building cost about 20% more than a traditional structure. The wind-powered turbine, solar water heater and other green features are expected pay for themselves and offset the higher building cost in eight years. #Adaptable_design #Airtightness #Benign_materials #Brownfield_redevelopment #Connection_to_outdoors #Daylighting #department_of_energy #Design_charrette #DOE #Droughttolerant_landscaping #Durability #Efficient_irrigation #Efficient_lighting #energy_efficient #Glazing #Green_framework #Green_specifications #HVAC #Indigenous_vegetation #Indoor_air_quality_monitoring #Insulation_levels #Integrated_team #Local_materials #Lowemitting_materials #Massing_and_orientation #Occupant_recycling #Onsite_renewable_electricity #Open_space_preservation #Passive_solar #Recycled_materials #Salvaged_materials #Stormwater_management #Transportation_benefits #Ventilation_effectiveness #Water_harvesting #Wetlands
