Surface Sampler Acquisition Assembly (SSAA) for a Viking '75 Mars lander spacecraft. This model omits the Surface Sampler Collector Head (SSCH) or scoop, which is available as a separate model. Most of the model is constructed to a high degree of fidelity (based on measurements of actual hardware by the author), though interior drive-train and boom stowage mechanism components are simplified. The original units were designed and built by Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin). The surface sampler was used to scoop up samples of Mars soil for analysis by science instruments in the lander. Two Viking landers were launched to Mars in 1975. Both landed successfully in 1976 and operated for six years (Viking 1) and four years (Viking 2).
