U.S.S. Mariner Star Trek Ship

U.S.S. Mariner Star Trek Ship

WideFoot
UPDATE! Shortly before the decision to start the Excelsior project, the need for a small, research-based ship was becoming apparent. Development of the Pathfinder class ship began, with Starfleet hoping to answer the question of how much speed and armament a ship could afford to be without. U.S.S. Pathfinder, NX-2300, was built essentially as just a very scaled-down version of the Constitution, but with an empty space where the research facilities would go. The ship would be outfitted with swappable laboratories depending on the mission. Performance was underwhelming. Too much space was taken up with armament and power generation for the proportionally massive warp nacelles. The ship was just as fast and almost as well armed as its larger counterparts. The swappable laboratories was an excellent idea, but the crew of the Pathfinder ships often found themselves wanting one more lab or an extra sensor array. Only five Pathfinder class ships were built: Pathfinder NX-2300, Mariner NCC-2301, Venera NCC-2302, Pioneer NCC-2303, Galileo NCC-2304. The Pathfinder class ship did find its niche as a companion to the slow, weaponless Oberth, offering protection in potentially hostile systems. The Pathfinder ships were refit with torpedo launchers replacing much of the rear sensor net, and an additional phaser array mounted on the saucer section. The swappable laboratory facilities were left as originally designed, supplementing the companion Oberth’s lab spaces. #1701 #2301 #drive #enterprise #fiction #future #Mariner #nacelle #NCC #saucer #scifi #science #ship #space #spaceship #star #Star_Trek #Starfleet #starship #trek #USS #warp
