Deck & Roof Combination

Deck & Roof Combination

Mark Gauthier.
This deck work was part of a renovation project, which refurbished and slightly enlarged the decks foot print. The house originally had a rear porch which had been made into additional kitchen space, likely 40 years before we did the deck upgrade. The deck we worked on had originally been the roof for the houses original rear porch. The footings for the original porch, had not been properly sized to handle the load of the porch, and the footings had not be positioned below the frost line. The problems the footings created for the old porch, (now additional kitchen area,) was an exterior wall which drooped from one end of the wall to the other end of the wall, by about 1 1/2 inchs in the centre. This added to the problems of sloping the deck evenly, and maintaining a level soffit. Design Features, Drip Edge Channels (in yellow), Bolt hole spacing's for the corner posts, Detachable railing sections shaped to follow the pitch of an upper roof, Floor Joist Tapered Sleepers to create 1/4" slope per foot, which were ripped using a plunge cut saw and a saw track, Herringbone Soffit, and properly spaced joists to provide for 4 ft and 8 ft seams to land on the centre of joists. Each drip edge channel was pitched and the water picked-up by a down spout scupper. Sorry, the drawing does not show these details. All framing and finishing components are on separate layers, to allow you to turn off on and on any component.
