This is one of my attempts to design a robot body/chassis that is articulated with "simple" hinge joints and bearing (swiveling/caster) points. The “abdomen” is composed of 9 “boxes” each with a 15 degree (30 max) turn, thus allowing the lower part of the robot to bend. This sits on a swivel base that rotates back and forth.
Two cameras at ‘eye level’ for binocular vision with a ‘sensor’ box beneath that would include audio pick-up, infrared detectors, etc. Please to note that the cameras can turn 10 degrees up and down and ten degrees back and forth within the ‘head’ of the protective casing. The head can also swivel around and is a hinge joint allowing the robot to look up and down.
This project is intended as a remote human user device, not a true ‘autonomous’ robot. Think a glorified Mars Rover type device. That is the real purpose of this device, to give a more human range to future missions to mars and other bodies in our solar system.
