1970s mainframe disc drive for Digital Equipment Corporation mainframes, specifically the DecSystem 20. Also used on some DEC minicomputers. About the size of a dishwasher. Either fixed (like the drive in your computer) or removable (like a floppy or jump drive today). Removable packs (which had to be inserted very carefully to prevent damaging them, the drive, or both) were about a foot tall and the diameter of a dinner plate. Held enormous capacity, as much as a whopping 100 megabytes! This drive by itself cost, then, about $25,000; the replacement 100 MB packs were about $700 each. Today you can buy a thumb-sized jump drive which is 40 times the capacity (4 gigabytes) and costs $10. #1960s #1970s #computer #DEC #Digital_Equipment #Digital_Equipment_Corporation #disk #hardware #large #magnetic #mainframe #minicomputer #old #pack #peripheral
