Port Tobacco One Room School

Port Tobacco One Room School

bmh
A classic example of a one room schoolhouse, this was built circa 1876 - the exact date of construction is unknown, since records were destroyed in the fire which consumed the old Port Tobacco courthouse in August, 1892. It served as a school in the segregated South for over 77 years, from the 1870's to 1924 it was used by white students, and from 1924 until 1953, African-American students. It then served various functions, including 4-H clubhose and library, until 1989, when it was leased to the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco, which restored and opened it to the public in 1994 #historic #Maryland #Port_Tobacco #schoolhouse
