Projected in 1789 by Juan de Villanueva, for Carlos III, the finality of the building was housing the Natural History Office (Gabinete de Historia Natural). It is considered the top of the Villanueva's creations. The Iberic War after the french invasion damaged this building because it was used as horses barracks, and french troop stolen all the plomb of the roof to make weapon ammo. In 1818 Fernando VII government decided to refurbish the building in order to avoid the total destruction. The use chosen was the Royal Paints Museum.
