The Lancaster shuttlecraft was introduced in the early 24th century and saw widespread use throughout Federation space.
||||| Model Background |||||
When I decided to try tackling some TNG-era starship designs, I had a problem: none of my existing shuttlecraft designs would fit well with that time period. So I needed to make a new one. I took some old concept art Probert did prior to TNG, and tried to model it as accurately as I could.
And I wasn't too happy with the result, so I started over, trying to emulate the concept art somewhat—although with the final product, the only real similarity between my model and that concept art is the general shape of the windows.
I'm not super-happy with this model (as evidenced, perhaps, by the very-hastily-drawn deflector) but at the same time I have very little desire to make a third attempt. I mostly just have the shuttlecraft models to fill in the shuttlebays on the larger ships and to help convey scale, so for now this Lancaster will do.
One surprising thing: the Lancaster looks a lot bigger than the other shuttle designs I've done (the Merchantman and Orca)... but it's really only very slightly larger—it has much greater volume, of course, but the dimensions are sufficiently similar for the Lancaster to (presumably) be able to use the same landing facilities as the older shuttles.
(Starship information is derived solely from my own imagination.)
