The Submari 70-94 is a relatively small attack submarine with a Diesel/AIP propulsion system. Very quiet and very maneuverable, the 70-94 is extremely effective for shore defense and localized patrol. Due to the small size, Range is limited to 8000 miles (at 20kts per mile) prior to needing to be refueled. However it is possible to refuel at sea, which can extend it range to supplies on board. Regardless, it is rare for the 70-94 to deploy for longer than 30 days from home port.
Crew consists of 15 officers and 15 enlisted men. The interior is designed for every person to have an individual bunk.
Cruising speed is 20 kts submerged. The 70-94 can stay submerged indefinitely, with the snorkel deployed from depths up to 30 meters. It can operate independent from the atmosphere with a full performance envelope for up to 7 days, 10 days with restrictions. AIP system consist of batteries and a Stirling engine.
Sonar consist of a Low Frequency Trailing Array, 2 Passive Side Scan Arrays and an Active Directional Front Array
There are six tubes 3 540 T1 Heavy Torpedo Tubes and 3 325 T2 MPL Torpedo Tubes. A total of 6 T1s and 18 T2s can be loaded. In addition, the T1 Tubes can be used to launch Submari MOS t.4 Anti Ship missiles. These are loaded in place of the 540 T1 Heavy Torpedoes. The lack of available space for missiles was noted early. This is the 70-94’s biggest weakness.
The 1st 70-94 was launched in 1996, after being laid down in 1994. The most notable item on its exterior design is the directional pump jet. This can be deflected by 15 degrees in any direction and by 30 in the primary cardinal directions. This gave the 70-94 unprecedented maneuverability for the time.
A Long Range version of the 70-94, the 90-94, was developed. However only 2 were laid down. There was not demand, at the time, for long range Diesel/AIP boats in the OGN. Both the 70-94 and the 90-94 are being replaced by the 95-14, the first of which is being constructed. This version is designed to solve both the capacity issue and the range issue with the -94 class AIP Subs.
