Tsunamis may cross entire ocean basins at speeds as great as 800 km/500 mi per hour, and strike coastal regions with devastating force. Thousands of lives have been lost in regions of the Pacific subject to destructive tsunamis, which may reach heights in excess of 30 m/100 ft. They are also referred to as seismic sea waves, and in popular (but not technical oceanographic) use as tidal waves. An unfamiliar phenomenon to many, the public's perception of tsunamis changed following the disaster that took place on 26 December 2004. The biggest earthquake for 40 years (magnitude 9.0) occurred between the Australian and Eurasian plates in the Indian Ocean and triggered a tsunami that spread over thousands of kilometres during several hours. The tsunami formed when energy from the earthquake vertically jolted the seabed by several metres, displacing hundreds of cubic kilometres of water. Large waves began racing away from the earthquake's epicentre, just north west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, at a speed of 800 km/500 mi per hour. As it reached shallow water near coastal areas it slowed but increased in height, up to 10 m/32 ft. With no tsunami detection equipment in place in the Indian Ocean, the coastal regions hit had no warning of its approach. Indonesia was worst hit, notably Aceh province on Sumatra, with whole towns destroyed and tens of thousands of lives lost. Eight more countries in S and E Asia were affected: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, and Seychelles. Less severely hit were the East African coasts of Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania. Within a week the total death toll was reported to be over 150 000, with thousands unaccounted for, and a massive international relief effort was launched. The final death toll was estimated at 300 000.
