Yellow House

Yellow House

Description
Since the early 20th Century this timber house in a hay meadow has stood next to the Yampa River. The owner of this working Western Colorado ranch near Tow Creek told me that his father bought the Old Yellow House in 1945. It was built of locally milled 3x6 dimensional timbers, half-dovetailed at the ends (corners). It's difficult to tell if the square nails were used on the dovetails in original construction, or later as a repair. Years after it was no longer lived in, and was used to store grain, the rodents attracted the rattlesnakes. We think it was built between 1895 and 1905. SE side of house still has faint remnants of the yellow paint. Not depicted (yet) on this historic structure model is the hand laid and grouted stone foundation, which was obscured by the tall grass. What an amazing place to live this must have been, frontier on the Moffat Road rail line, with the Yampa River counting the seasons. #co #colorado #county #creek #historic #house #ranch #routt #tow #western #yellow
