Dresden - Sophienkirche

Generalfeldmarschall
(c) Generalfeldmarschall - The Evangelical Court Church (Evangelische Hofkirche), also known as the Church of St. Sophia of Dresden, was the oldest church in Dresden. Originally part of a Franciscan monastery (Franziskanerkloster). the church stood empty after the Reformation until the early 17th century, when it reopened as the Protestant (Lutheran) court church of Dresden. The Sophienkirche, that contained a valuable Silbermann organ, was the only Gothic church in all Dresden, and with its two spires from the 19th century, was a recognizable landmark in the city skyline. Nowadays, only a small conmemorative plaque and a ground plan in the pavement can remind people of the oldest church in Dresden, that burnt out in the bombing of 14-16 February 1945 and was demolished in the 60s. #Barock #baroque #Busmannkapelle #Cholerabrunnen #church #Church_of_St_Sophia #court_church #Deutschland #Dresden #Evangelical #Evangelisch #Evangelische #Evangelische_Hofkirche #Franciscan #Franziskanerkloster #Germany #gothic #Gotik #Hofkirche #Klosterkirche #Lutheran #neogothic #Postplatz #Residenzschloss #Sachsen #Saxony #Schlosskapelle #Silbermann #Sophienkirche #St_Sophias_Church #Taschenbergpalais #Theaterplatz #Zwinger
