The museum, formerly known as the Taiwan Museum of Art, was founded in 1988. During the initial period, it was under the Taiwan Provincial Government. In 1999, it came under the supervision for the Council of Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan, and became Taiwan's only national museum of fine arts. In the same year, the 9/21 Earthquake shook the country and, for the following 5 years, the NTMFA underwent reconstruction. On July 3, 2004, the museum reopened its doors to the public. The NTMFA is a departure from fine art museums of the bygone era, whose image tends to be stern and serious. Today, at the dawn of the 21st century, the museum space is at once open and intimate. It serves as a venue for artistic, academic and recreational activities.
